Plasma and cavitation dynamics during pulsed laser microsurgery in vivo.

چکیده
We compare the plasma and cavitation dynamics underlying pulsed laser microsurgery in water and in fruit fly embryos (in vivo)--specifically for nanosecond pulses at 355 and 532 nm. We find two key differences. First, the plasma-formation thresholds are lower in vivo--especially at 355 nm--due to the presence of endogenous chromophores that serve as additional sources for plasma seed electrons. Second, the biological matrix constrains the growth of laser-induced cavitation bubbles. Both effects reduce the disrupted region in vivo when compared to extrapolations from measurements in water.

Role of laser-induced plasma formation in pulsed cellular microsurgery and micromanipulation.
We investigate experimentally the physical processes underlying pulsed cellular microsurgery and micromanipulation using nanosecond 532- and 1064-nm laser pulses focused at high numerical aperture. We find that the laser parameters employed for many microirradiation techniques are congruent with those leading to optical breakdown in water. We determine the size and shape of the laser-induced pl...
متن کاملElectrical alternative to pulsed fiber-delivered lasers in microsurgery
An electrical system based on a tapered microelectrode has been developed for generation of high voltage sub-microsecond discharge in physiological medium. Different types of the resulting pulses of current are investigated as well as the dynamics of the associated cavitation bubbles. A highly localized zone of power dissipation—about 20 mm in size—results in a low threshold energy of cavitatio...
متن کاملPulsed laser microbeam-induced cell lysis: time-resolved imaging and analysis of hydrodynamic effects.
Time-resolved imaging was used to examine the use of pulsed laser microbeam irradiation to produce cell lysis. Lysis was accomplished through the delivery of 6 ns, lambda=532 nm laser pulses via a 40x, 0.8 NA objective to a location 10 microm above confluent monolayers of PtK2 cells. The process dynamics were examined at cell surface densities of 600 and 1000 cells/mm2 and pulse energies corres...
متن کاملDynamics of ArF excimer laser-induced cavitation bubbles in gel surrounded by a liquid medium.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Cavitation bubbles have been shown to be the driving force of tissue cutting in 193 nm ArF excimer laser-based vitreoretinal microsurgery. In the present work we investigate the dynamics of cavitation bubbles inside a gelatin gel in a saline environment using fast flash microphotography. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS The screening influence of the saline medium w...
متن کاملStudy of laser ablation using nano-second laser pulses
In this paper, the laser ablation process based on the irradiation of nanosecond pulsed lasers on a copper target surface in the presence of Helium gas is studied. The dynamical behaviors of the generated plasma in the helium gas and evaporated copper at the atmospheric pressure are examined using a laser pulse, laser wavelength of and intensity of 7×1010W/cm2. A one-dimensional thermal model ...
